Living in Chicken Paradise

Today I am writing you from San Antonio. I'm on my Texas tour and had a very nice evening last night speaking to the folks of San Antonio.

Many thanks to Anne and Joe Barfield. Anne runs the local gluten intolerant group and they operate a gluten and dairy free B&B here in San Antonio called Chicken Paradise. I am currently sitting outside in the wonderful San Antonio heat with chickens passing by as I write this.

A few cicadas are calling in the noon heat. Ironically, it's cooler here than it is in Seattle, where the temperature has been over 100 degrees for the past couple of days. I sure am glad to get out of there and down here to some reasonable summer weather! How funny is that? Everyone warned me about Texas in the summer, but I got lucky.

Every once in awhile I also see the peacocks that roam the premises. If you get down this way, be sure to stay at Chicken Paradise. Not only will you enjoy your time here and the wonderful breakfast, but you'll find other gluten free and dairy free services in town, such as the Aussie Bakery, which is where I'm headed next.

Please visit www.ChickenParadise.com to learn more about this unique place and to see picture of some very interesting features. In particular note the massive tree house. Maybe I should have gone up there to write this? I can't complain, I'm down by the pool and Joe brought out a huge fan to cool me off. Uhoh, gotta run. I think I hear a chicken coming.

Gluten, Dairy, and Soy Free Shopping Guide

Cecelia's Marketplace, publisher of the Gluten Free Grocery Shopping Guide, now has two new books out. Recently released were a Gluten and Casein (Dairy) Free guide, and a Gluten/Casein (Dairy)/Soy Free guide.

I was very pleasantly surprised to discover this at the recent GIG conference. Most of my patients have more than just a gluten issue, as do I. Gluten and dairy free is relevant to a far greater number of people in my office, and adding the soy is also going to benefit many of my patients.

These shopping guides contain thousands of products on the market, listed by food category. For example, there are sections for cereals, breads, bars, deli meats, cookie mixes, etc. It is a very practical guide that will help you with your daily shopping needs. It will also give you an excellent idea about what is available that meets your requirement. Even if they don't have it at your grocery store, you can always request it or order it online.

I encourage everyone to use these books. There is nothing else like them. They come in a handy small booklet size that you can take to the store with you, or do some homework ahead of time and create a list of your favorite things. And best of all, they are produced by a couple from Michigan, Dainis and Mara, two of the nicest people you could ever hope to meet.

You can learn more about these unique resources at www.ceceliasmarketplace.com.

Yoga Journal on Gluten Free

As you may have seen in a recent blog, I was disappointed in the August edition of Yoga Journal's tiny coverage of food allergies and intolerances. Not only was it tiny, but it was inaccurate on several accounts. However, in that same edition they also ran a short article on gluten intolerance where I was also quoted.

The article, titled "Sweet, No Wheat" focuses on eating gluten free. And of course, as the title indicates, it's about eating grains and sweets. The article gives a short introduction to gluten intolerance as well, and covers some of the range of symptoms that can be see in gluten intolerance.

Carol Fenster, one of my favorite gluten free cookbook writers, is the primary source for the article and is also quoted. Some of her recipes are in the magazine as well.

It's nice to see Yoga Journal cover the topic of gluten intolerance. I'm particularly grateful that they noted that there are many millions of people who don't have celiac disease yet are still gluten intolerant. I'd like to thank them for stepping up to plate on that issue.

You can't find this article online yet, but the magazine is available at your local store.

Delicious Planet

Delicious Planet, now that is a catchy name. Does it even matter what it is? Of course it does, and you are going to go crazy if I don't tell you very soon.

Alright. I'll relent. Delicious Planet is a local Seattle area company that delivers organic prepared meals right to your door. (I apologize to those of you who don't live here. Maybe you've got something similar in your area?)

Last week Lianne of Delicious Planet delivered lunch to our office. We relished in a delicious and completely dairy, gluten, egg, and cane sugar free meal (and soy free too I think). I certainly had no complaints. It was the best and most nutritious lunch that I've had in quite some time.

Delicious Planet was founded 10 years ago by Randi Carter, a graduate of the nutrition program at Bastyr University. She focuses on providing people healthy organic food that is made from local produce. Therefore it's seasonal and sustainable, but it's also... you guessed it, Delicious.

She also specializes in creating hypoallergenic dishes, which can even be made to order. For more information please visit Delicious-Planet.com.
